Piscataway, N.J. (March 30, 2012) – Despite a personal-best five assists from senior attack Danielle Mascera (Verona, N.J.), the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team was edged by No. 6 Notre Dame, 13-12, in overtime on Friday at the RU Turf Field.
Mascera added a goal to pace the Scarlet Knights (5-4) with six points. Junior midfielder Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) posted three goals for RU. Notre Dame attack Maggie Tamasitis led the Irish (8-0) with five points on two goals and three assists.
Junior goalkeeper Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) was credited with the loss, despite making five saves, including one on a free position shot in overtime that preserved the RU lead.
The Scarlet Knights rode momentum from regulation to take a 12-11 lead in the overtime period. Davis scored with 3:11 to play, grabbing a pass from Mascera and burying it bottom-left corner, but UND scored twice in the final minute to secure the win.
Rutgers got out to an early 2-0 lead, as Mascera intercepted a pass and buried a score 10 minutes into play and followed wish a dish to Anderson at the 17:44 mark.
After the two teams traded goals, UND ripped off a 6-0 run that spanned both halves, led by Lindsay Powell with three unassisted scores.
Senior Brittany Davis (Wading River, N.Y.) stopped the run with 23:16 to play in regulation, corralling a pass from Mascera behind the cage and netting it top-corner. Swapping goals for the next 10 minutes, Rutgers registered four of the final five scores to force overtime. Freshman midfielder Kristin Kocher (Medford, N.J.) powered through the UND defense with 15 seconds remaining to knot the score at 11.
Rutgers continues its home weekend with Connecticut on Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will serve as the squad’s Friends of Jaclyn Day. Little sister Genna Camiolo will serve as an honorary captain for the game.
