Rutgers Women’s Lacrosse Falls at No. 9 Penn, 15-7

    The Scarlet Knights were led by sophomore midfielder Katrina Martinelli with two goals.

    Philadelphia (March 7, 2012) – Despite a strong six-goal second half, Rutgers women’s lacrosse (1-3) fell at No. 9 Penn (2-1) by a score of 15-7 Wednesday night at Franklin Field.

    The Scarlet Knights were led by sophomore midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) with two goals and redshirt junior attack Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) with a goal and two assists.

    Rutgers was able to outshoot Penn 17-10 in the second half. In the cage, junior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) notched the loss, making four saves in the contest.

    The Quakers were led by a pair of upperclassmen, senior Erin Brennan dished out six assists, while junior Caroline Bunting scored four goals.

    The Scarlet Knights trailed 8-1 at the break, after a 6-0 run by the Quakers to end the half. Penn got on the board first, scoring twice before a goal by senior attack Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) brought RU within one, 2-1. The Penn run was led by two goals by Courtney Tomchik.

    RU fought back after intermission, scoring five of the next seven goals. Martinelli whipped in a free position shot at the 25:56 mark to bring the score to 9-2. Junior Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) added another goal just 30 seconds later before Penn answered with a score by Meredith Cain.

    Rutgers posted a 3-0 run over the next eight minutes, as Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.), Brittany Davis (Wading River, N.Y.) and McGinley each scored in the run to pull the Scarlet Knights within four, 10-6.

    Penn would control the contest from there, registering a 5-1 run to end the game.

    RU finishes up its three-game road swing Saturday, March 10 at Hofstra. Game time is set for 12 noon and will be televised via tape delay on Verizon FiOS1.
