Rutgers Men's Lacrosse Ends Regular Season with Dominating 12-2 Win at Providence
Nine Scarlet Knights Scored in RU's Second BIG EAST Victory

  • PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 9, 2010) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse capped off the regular season with a dominating 12-2 victory over BIG EAST foe Providence Sunday afternoon at Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

    The Scarlet Knights (6-8, 2-4) outshot the Friars (0-14, 0-6) by a commanding 40-13 margin and outdueled their conference rival on ground balls by a 36-21 edge.

    Nine RU student-athletes scored on Sunday. For the second straight game, senior midfielder Gerhard Buehning (Essex Fells, N.J.) and sophomore attackman Kevin Hover (Belle Mead, N.J.) led RU in scoring as they each tallied three points on two goals and an assist. Senior attackman Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, Md.) alsoscored a pair of goals.

    Freshman attackman Duncan Clancy (Princeton, N.J.) earned his second straight start and for the second game in a row the RU rookie tallied a goal and an assist.

    Senior midfielder Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) notched multiple points for the 12th time this season and 42nd time of his RU career with a goal and an assist.

    Senior goalie Billy Olin (Horseheads, N.Y.) earned his second victory of the season and 18th of his RU career and scored six saves.

    Providence’s goals were scored by junior midfielder Evan Helda and freshman midfielder Kyle Dexter.

    Rutgers opened the game with a 5-0 lead with 9:54 remaining in the first half. Providence avoided the first half shutout when Helda took a pass from Jack Nolan and fired it in the back of the net with 35 seconds remaining.

    RU quickly responded when junior midfielder Chris Mattes (Westfield, N.J.) scored his second career goal off the following faceoff to give the Scarlet Knights a commanding 6-1 lead at intermission.

    Rutgers didn’t let up in the second half as it tallied three straight goals to start the third quarter, including both of Buehning’s scores, to push RU’s lead to 9-1.

    Dexter’s goal came with 30 seconds left in the third period to put the Scarlet Knights lead at 9-2.

    Junior attackman Kory Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) snapped a three-game scoring drought by firing his 20th goal of the season at the 8:58 mark of the final quarter. Kelly has scored 20-plus goals in each of his three seasons at Rutgers.

    Senior midfielder Brendan Porter (Maplewood, N.J.) scored his second goal of the season with 6:07 remaining in the game.

    Clancy scored the game’s final goal at the 5:20 mark in the fourth quarter to cap off Rutgers’ 12-2 BIG EAST victory.
