  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - No. 18 Penn State (6-5, 3-2 ECAC) captured the sixth annual Friendship Cup with a 7-6 victory over No. 8 Rutgers (9-3, 2-1 ECAC) today at Yurcak Field. It was Penn State’s 10th consecutive victory over Rutgers and its fifth consecutive win this season.

The Nittany Lions dominated the start of the game, out-shooting Rutgers 18-2 in the first quarter, while taking a 3-0 lead. For the game, Penn State out-shot RU, 41-25. The PSU defense was very stingy, as well, not allowing a Scarlet Knight goal until Delby Powless (Six Nations, Ontario) scored with 4:21 left in the second quarter. Rutgers’ defense was also impressive, shutting the Nittany Lions out for 17:58 during the second and third quarters to keep RU in the game. After taking the 3-0 lead in the opening stanza, the Nittany Lions didn’t score again until 12:24 remained in the third.

Despite the slow start, Rutgers was only down by two, 3-1, after Powless’ goal. The teams went into halftime with the same score.

Senior Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ) opened the second half by scoring just 38 seconds into the action, off a pass from classmate Nick Schmidt (Hicksville, NY), to cut the PSU lead to one, 3-2. Penn State answered by scoring three of the next four goals to take a 6-3 lead into the fourth quarter. Rutgers’ goal during that time came from the stick of Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY).

Rutgers again closed the deficit to one, 6-5, by scoring twice during the first 2:45 of the final quarter. Senior Ken Springer (Ridgewood, NJ) scored 25 seconds into the quarter, followed by Duca’s second goal of the day just 20 seconds later. Will Cutler answered for PSU :52 later to push the lead back to two, 7-5. Duca tallied his third goal of the day and team-leading 27th of the season at the 5:21 mark, but it would be the last goal scored by either team.

Both goalies, freshman Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) of Rutgers and Chris Garrity of Penn State, were outstanding, recording 14 saves in the contest.

Duca’s three goals led the way for RU, while Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) dished out two assists, and Springer finished with one goal and one assist. Penn State’s seven goals were registered by six different players.

Rutgers will return to action with a crucial ECAC match-up against Georgetown on Saturday, April 26, in Washington, D.C. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
