PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ) and freshman Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) have been named ECAC Offensive and Rookie of the Week for the RU men’s lacrosse team, announced the league office Monday. The awards come on the heels of the Scarlet Knights’ 12-11 overtime victory at No. 4 Syracuse on Saturday, April 12.
Against the Orangemen, Duca netted the game-winning goal 57 seconds into the extra session. It was Duca’s second game-winning overtime goal this season. Against UMBC on March 29, he scored with three seconds remaining in overtime to give Rutgers a 12-11 victory. Duca scored three goals against the Orangemen, adding one assist. He now leads the team with 28 points (24 G, 4 A) through 11 games.
Havalchak played brilliantly in goal against Syracuse, making 14 saves, including six in the pivotal fourth quarter. He also ensured the overtime period by making a spectacular save in the final minute of play on an open shot by a Syracuse attacker. For the season, Havalchak owns a 7.42 goals-against average and a .626 save percentage.
The award is the second for Havalchak, as he was named ECAC Rookie of the Week on March 3. Duca is the third Scarlet Knight to be named conference offensive player of the week. Sophomore Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) won the award on March 10, and junior Delby Powless (Six Nations, Ontario) was named a week later on March 17.
Rutgers (9-2, 2-0) is ranked eighth in the latest USILA Poll (April 14) and seventh in the latest Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll (April 14). The Scarlet Knights will host No. 18 Penn State (4-5) in an ECAC match-up on Saturday, April 19, at 3:00 p.m.
