  • SYRACUSE, NY – Senior Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ) scored a goal 57 seconds into overtime to give the 10th-ranked Rutgers (9-2) men’s lacrosse team a 12-11 overtime victory over No. 4 Syracuse (7-3) today at the Carrier Dome. It was Duca’s second game-winning overtime goal of the season, as he scored with three seconds remaining in overtime to beat UMBC on March 29. Rutgers is now 3-0 in overtime this season, and 3-0 against ranked teams on the road.

Rutgers held a three goal lead (11-8) with 7:40 remaining in the game, but Syracuse scored three consecutive goals to close regulation and force overtime. Rutgers received the ball first in overtime due to a Syracuse penalty at the close of the fourth quarter, and Duca was able to score off a pass from sophomore Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) to give Rutgers the victory. It was the first Rutgers victory against Syracuse since 1998.

Lovejoy started the scoring with a goal at the 12:42 mark of the first quarter, but Syracuse’s Michael Springer tied the game 8:02 later. Senior Nick Schmidt (Hicksville, NY) answered with the first of his three goals on the day with 3:37 left, followed by a Syracuse goal to tie the score after the first quarter, 2-2.

Schmidt opened the second quarter with his second goal of the day to put RU ahead, 3-2, and senior Ken Springer (Ridgewood, NJ) fired a rocket from 12 yards out to give RU a 4-2 lead 1:03 later. A penalty by freshman goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) sent him to the sidelines at the 10:26 mark and SU’s Brian Nee took advantage, scoring on his replacement 13 seconds later, to cut the lead to 4-3 in favor of Rutgers. After another goal by Nee, Lovejoy came from behind the cage to score his second goal of the day to give RU the lead, 5-4, with 3:20 left in the half. Just over a minute later, Ken Springer ended the first half scoring with his second goal of the day to push RU’s lead to two, 6-4. Rutgers led at the half despite committing five penalties, totaling 4:30.

Syracuse's Brian Crockett scored 53 seconds into the second half to pull SU to within one, 6-5, but junior Delby Powless (Six Nations, Ontario) and Duca scored consecutive goals in a span of 25 seconds to put RU ahead by three, 8-5, with 6:31 left. After a spectacular save by SU goalie Jay Pfeifer on a shot by Schmidt, Michael Powell scored his first goal of the day to make the score 8-6 with 3:47 left in the third. Lovejoy responded with his third goal of the day 1:07 later to put RU ahead, 9-6. Lovejoy's three goals are a career-high. With 1:02 left in the third, Powell scored again for the Orangemen, but Duca scored on a fast break to push the lead back to three, 10-7, with 21 seconds left in the quarter.

The RU lead was cut to two with a Syracuse goal 3:22 into the fourth quarter, but Schmidt scored with 7:40 remaining to put Rutgers ahead, 11-8. Syracuse then scored three straight goals, including two in a span of just 19 seconds, to tie the game and force overtime. Havalchak ensured the extra session with a brilliant save in the final seconds of the contest. He finished with 14 saves and faced 43 Syracuse shots. Duca, Lovejoy and Schmidt each tallied three goals for Rutgers, while Springer had two goals and dished out two assists.

Michael Springer, brother of RU's Ken Springer, led Syracuse with three goals, while Powell and Nee each added two.

Rutgers will return to action on Saturday, April 19, at home against Penn State at 3:00 p.m.
