  • PISCATAWAY, NJ -Army held Rutgers scoreless for a span of 25:32 in the second half to pull out a 9-8 upset victory over the eighth-ranked Scarlet Knights today at Yurcak Field, 9-8. The Black Knights were sparked by the play of sophomore goalie Matt Darak, who entered the game with 11:16 left in the second quarter and went on to save six shots and allow just two goals over the final 41:16 of the game.

    With the scored tied at 8-8, Army’s Jeff Bryan scored the game-winning goal with 4:07 left in the fourth quarter to give the Black Knights the victory. The goal came six minutes after Rutgers’ Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) tied the game with 10:07 left.

    The game was full of streaks, with Rutgers putting together a five-goal run in the second quarter, and Army answering with four consecutive goals of its own. With Army leading 4-2 in the second quarter, Rutgers scored five consecutive times to take a 7-4 lead with 5:39 left in the half. However, Army responded with a streak of four goals, ending with John Walker’s goal with 12:10 left in the game to give Army an 8-7 lead. Blomquist and Bryan then scored the final goals of the day.

    Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) started the scoring with a goal just 33 second into the game. Army answered with two goals in the span of 44 seconds to take a 2-1 lead with 9:47 left in the first quarter. Senior Nick Schmidt (Hicksville, NY) tied the game for RU, but Army added two goals to end the first stanza with a 4-2 lead.

    Rutgers began the second quarter with its five-goal run, with senior Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ) scoring three of the goals. Duca finished with a team-leading three goals, while Schmidt netted two goals and added two assists. White, Blomquist and Delby Powless (Six Nations, Ontario) added one goal apiece. In goal, freshman Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) had 10 saves.

    Jim Wagner led Army with three goals, while Bryan had four assists and scored the game-winning goal.

    Rutgers will return to action on Saturday, April 12, at Syracuse at 2:30 p.m.
