  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ) scored a goal with three seconds left in overtime to give Rutgers a 12-11 victory over No. 17 UMBC today at Yurcak Field in front of 1,027 fans. The ninth-ranked Scarlet Knights (8-1, 2-0) scored the final six goals of the game, erasing a four-goal fourth quarter deficit.

UMBC (4-2, 1-2) held a 10-6 lead entering the fourth quarter, and after a Joey Kestermann goal, the Retrievers lead was five with 14:26 left. It would be the last goal of the day for the visitors, as RU scored the final five goals of the quarter to force overtime. Duca was clutch down the stretch, scoring three of his four goals in the fourth quarter and overtime. He started the fourth quarter run with his second goal of the day at the 13:43 mark. Junior Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) netted his third goal of the day 2:01 later, before Duca scored again with 9:48 left to cut the lead to two, 11-9. Senior Nick Schmidt (Hicksville, NY) scored an unassisted goal at the 8:23 mark to pull RU to within one, 11-10, and junior Delby Powless (Six Nations, Ontario) forced overtime with his third goal of the day with 2:37 remaining.

In overtime, UMBC won the face-off and had two possessions in which to score, but the Rutgers defense held them without a shot both times. Rutgers took advantage during its second possession, when Duca drove to the left side of the cage and fired a shot into the net with just three seconds left to end the game. Schmidt assisted the goal, his third of the day.

UMBC came out strong at the start of the game, taking a 2-0 lead with 11:21 left in the opening quarter. White answered with a goal to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Retrievers tacked on two goals in the span of 1:05 to stretch the lead to 4-1 with 6:51 left in the quarter. Powless scored Rutgers’ second goal of the day at the 4:32 mark, but UMBC added another goal two minutes later to lead, 5-2. Duca finished the high-scoring first quarter with his first goal of the day, with 34 seconds left, to cut the lead to 5-3 after the first 15 minutes of play.

Rutgers was able to tie the game at halftime, 5-5, by shutting out UMBC in the second quarter and adding goals from Duca and White. UMBC regained the lead by outscoring RU 5-1 in the third quarter, taking a 10-6 lead into the fourth, before RU made its run to force overtime.

Rutgers got the win despite winning just five of 27 face-offs. In the second half, UMBC won 12 of the 14 face-offs, as well as the face-off to start the overtime period.

Duca led the Scarlet Knights by tying his career high with four goals. Nick Schmidt recorded two goals and three assists for a career-high five points, while White and Powless each contributed three goals. In goal, freshman Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) faced 34 shots and made 10 saves.

The Scarlet Knights will remain at home to face Army on Saturday, April 5, at 1 p.m.
