PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse player Colin Checcio (Wayne, Pa.) was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Week and teammate Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) was named the Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced.
Checcio earned offensive player honors following his five-goal performance in RU's 12-11 double-overtime win over Hobart on March 24. He netted the game-winning goal 23 seconds into the second overtime period to give RU its second win of the season as well as its first conference win.
Checcio now leads the Scarlet Knights in goals with 14. He also has three assists on the season to give him a team-high 17 points through five games. In addition, the senior attackman is fourth among conference players in shots with 21 (10.5 pg) and his 14 goals place him second among all ECAC players. Earlier this season, Checcio earned a spot on the ECAC's March 12 weekly honor roll after scoring a combined five goals in RU's first two games of the season.
Pennington was named Rookie of the Week following after recording two goals against Hobart, including the game-tying goal in the win over Hobart. He also had two assists to finish with four points against the Statesmen. Pennington has now recorded five-straight multi-point games, becoming the first Scarlet Knight to do so since last season when current senior Matt Gaines (Abingdon, Md.) alsorecorded five-consecutive multi-point games (March 10-28). Pennington has eight goals and four assists through five games and also leads the team with 19 ground balls.
The Scarlet Knights are next in action when they travel to ECAC opponent St. John's on Saturday, March 31, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
