  • GENEVA, N.Y. – Senior Colin Checcio (Wayne, Pa.) scored five goals, including the game-winner, to help lead the Rutgers men's lacrosse team (2-3, 1-1) to a 12-11 double-overtime win over with ECAC opponent Hobart (3-4, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon. Six different Scarlet Knights scored in the game, helping guide the team to its first conference win of the season. Rutgers has now won two-straight games over Hobart and even the all-time series at 2-2-1.

Rutgers rallied from a three-goal halftime deficit to tie the game in the fourth period on a goal by freshman Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) to force overtime. Both teams failed to score in the first overtime period but Checcio's goal at the 3:37 mark in the second overtime gave Rutgers the win. Rutgers out-shot the Statesmen, 37-32, and won 15 of 27 face-offs.

Despite two first-half goals by Checcio, Rutgers found itself trailing as Hobart scored three goals in the first quarter and five in the second to take an 8-5 lead heading into halftime.

The Scarlet Knights came out strong in the second half with four third-quarter goals, including two more by Checcio. Rutgers' defense held Hobart to just three goals in the second half while two fourth-quarter goals by Rutgers, including the final score in regulation by Pennington, tied the game 11.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Checcio scored the game-winner on the only shot of the period to give the Scarlet Knights the victory and keep Hobart winless in conference play.

Checcio finished with a game-high five goals, while Penningtonfinished with two scores and two assists. Checcio now has a team-high 14 goals on the season while Pennington has recorded multiple-points in all five of RU's games. Senior Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, N.Y.) also had two goals while Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) contributed two assists.

Pete Pantages (Roseland, N.J.) got the start in goal, allowing eight of Hobart's 11 scores before rookie Bill Olin (Elmira, N.Y.) entered the game in the second half. In his first-ever collegiate action, Olin allowed just three goals and made seven saves.

The Statesmen were led on offense by Daryl Veltman and Chris David, both of whom recorded hat-tricks. Veltman also added one assist while teammate Matt Smalley had two goals in the game. Goalie Brandon Baer made nine saves for Hobart.

The Scarlet Knights will face their second-consecutive ECAC opponent when they travel to St. John's on Saturday, March 31, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
