CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Rutgers freshman Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) has been named the ECAC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Pennington made his first collegiate starts against Dowling and then-No. 14 Delaware, finishing with two goals and two assists on 12 shots. Senior Colin Checcio (Wayne, Pa.) also earned a spot on the conference's weekly honor roll after he recorded five goals and one assist in RU's first two games of the season.
Pennington got his first collegiate start against Dowling in the Scarlet Knights' (1-1) 17-9 win over the Golden Lions on Feb. 27. Pennington scored two goals on six shots in the season-opener. The 17 goals scored by Rutgers were the most in a season-opener since the 1997 season and the most in any game since defeating Quinnipiac 17-4 on March 13, 2004. He also went 14-for-27 in face-offs and had a game-high nine ground balls.
The midfielder continued his standout play in the team's next game against Delaware, finishing with two assists and six shots against the Blue Hens. On the season, Pennington has totaled four points, taken 12 shots, and scooped-up a team-best 10 ground balls through two starts.
Checcio also had two solid games for Rutgers, finishing the week with five goals, including three against the Blue Hens. The five scores, combined with his one assist against Delaware, gives the attackman a team-high six points on the season.
The Scarlet Knights will open ECAC play on Saturday, March 10, when they travel to face Fairfield at 2:00 p.m. It marks the conference-opener for both teams.
