NEWARK, Del. – The Rutgers men's lacrosse team (1-1) lost a close battle with fourteenth-ranked Delaware (4-0), falling by a score of 7-5 on Saturday afternoon in Newark, Del. Colin Checcio (Wayne, Pa.) led the Scarlet Knights in scoring with three goals but it was not enough to surpass the Blue Hens, who improve to 4-0 on the season.
Delaware got on the board first with two unanswered goals before Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, N.Y.) got the offense started for Rutgers with a goal at the 10:13 mark. The Scarlet Knights trailed by just two (3-1) at the end of the first quarter but two goals by the Blue Hens in the second quarter had Rutgers trailing 5-2 at the half.
Checcio scored his second goal of the game in the third quarter to bring the Scarlet Knights within 6-3. Delaware led 7-3 heading into the final quarter of play but Rutgers held Delaware scoreless in the final period. Doctor and Checcio scored two more goals for the Scarlet Knights, but Delaware managed to hold on for the 7-5 victory.
Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) led the team in assists with two. RU goalie Lyle Farrar (Lexington, Va.) had another solid outing in goal for the Scarlet Knights, posting 12 saves in his second collegiate start.
Rutgers finished with 38 shots in the game to Delaware's 39, but was just 2-of-16 in face-offs. Rutgers did have just 14 turnovers in the game, while forcing the Blue Hens to turn the ball over 22 times.
Delaware's Jordan Hall finished with three goals and goalie Tommy Scherr made nine saves for the Blue Hens.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in on Saturday, March 10, when they travel to Fairfield for a 2:00 p.m. game.
