PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman attackman Mike Dugan (Summit, NJ) and redshirt freshman midfielder Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, NY) have been honored for their performances in Rutgers’ contest against Georgetown last Saturday, the ECAC announced on Monday. Dugan is the Rookie of the Week, while Rommel earned a spot on the weekly Honor Roll.
In Rutgers’ 9-8 loss to fifth-ranked Georgetown, Dugan netted his third collegiate hat trick, scoring twice in the second quarter as RU overcome a 4-1 deficit to forge a 4-4 halftime tie. He completed his day with a fourth-quarter goal that cut the Hoyas’ lead to 8-6. Dugan currently has nine goals on the season, scoring three times against Manhattan (3/14), Hobart (3/25) and Georgetown (4/29). For his efforts against Hobart, Dugan was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week.
Rutgers (5-8, 2-4 ECAC) has had three different players – Chris O’Dougherty (Kinnelon, NJ), Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, MD) and Dugan – named the ECAC Rookie of the Week, the most of any conference team. Additionally, Dugan is the only two-time winner in the league this season. Rutgers’ lineup features as many as six freshmen who are seeing significant playing time, and 31 percent of the Scarlet Knights’ 97 goals have been scored by players who are either freshmen or sophomores.
Rommel netted a career-high three goals on Saturday. He opened the RU scoring at 3:05 of the first quarter and added two goals in the second half, bringing the Scarlet Knights to within one, 9-8, with 3:45 to play. He has 11 points on the season (9 G, 2 A) and has played in all 13 games.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, May 6, when it travels to Amherst, MA, for the season finale against 13th-ranked Massachusetts (9-4, 4-2 ECAC). The game can be seen nationally on ESPNU and also on ESPN360.
