  • PISCATAWAY, N.J - The fifth-ranked Georgetown Hoyas (10-2, 5-1 ECAC) snuffed out a last-second scoring chance by Rutgers (5-8, 2-4 ECAC) to preserve a 9-8 victory over the Scarlet Knights on Saturday at a sun-drenched Yurcak Field.  It was Rutgers’ fourth one-goal loss of the season.

The offensive stars of the afternoon for RU were redshirt freshman Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Mike Dugan (Summit, N.J.), who both finished with three goals.  Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) and Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA) scored once, which Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, N.Y.) finished with two assists.

Georgetown’s Dave Paolisso and Trevor Casey each had two goals while Brandan Cannon had three assists.  Sophomore Matt McBride scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 11:41 to play in the fourth quarter, ripping a shot from 16 yards out that gave GU a 9-6 lead.

The Scarlet Knights responded to McBride’s goal a minute and a half later as Britts came from around the back of the cage and fired a high shot past goalie Rich D’Andrea (10:13).  Both defenses settled in, however, and Rutgers did not draw within one goal until Rommel completed his hat trick off a pass from Doctor (3:45).

Rutgers would gain possession following a Georgetown turnover with less then one minute to play in regulation and quickly called a timeout after advancing the ball into its zone.  Britts’ shot from 10 yards out bounced in front of the goal and went wide with four seconds left to end the game.

Senior goalie Greg Havalchak, one of 11 seniors honored prior to the game, made 12 saves, including nine in the second half.  His counterpart, D’Andrea, stopped seven shots.  The Hoyas won 13-of-21 face-offs and was a perfect eight-for-eight as it built a 4-1 second-quarter lead.

A late flurry in the first half helped the Scarlet Knights come back to tie the game at 4-4, capped by Gaines’ goal with just one second left in the second quarter.  Dugan scored back-to-back goals (5:43 and 1:03) before Gaines’ unassisted tally.  Georgetown scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half before Rommel took a pass from Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, MD) to make the score 6-5 with 4:12 to play in the third.

Gaines continues to lead RU offensively this season with a team-high 24 points (20 G, 4 A) while Doctor now has 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.  Havalchak’s 12 saves give him 146 on the season and 642 in his 53-game career.

The Scarlet Knights return to action next Saturday, May 6, when it travels to face 11th-ranked Massachusetts at Garber Field.  Gametime is slated for 3:30 p.m. and the contest can be seen lives on ESPNU and ESPN 360.
