  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Syracuse’s Mike Leveille scored unassisted with seven seconds left in overtime to give the 12th-ranked Orange (5-4) a 13-12 victory over Rutgers (5-5) on Saturday in front of 2,539 at Yurcak Field.  Leveille’s goal spoiled a remarkable fourth-quarter come back by RU, as the Scarlet Knights scored the final four goals to force an extra session.

Trailing 12-8 entering the fourth quarter, Rutgers’ Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) scored on an extra-man opportunity with 9:24 left that started the Scarlet Knights’ rally.  Gaines, who finished with a career-high four goals, netted another score with 5:49 to play off an assist from Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, NY) and the momentum was clearly in RU’s favor.  A minute and a half later, Austin Rodgers (Baltimore, MD) made the score 12-11 off a pass from Colin Checcio (Wayne, PA), but the game-tying goal would not occur until just 12 seconds remained, as freshman Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, MD) picked up an errant shot from Rommel and ripped a shot past SU goalie Peter Coluccini.

In overtime, Syracuse won the opening face-off but turned the ball over.  Coluccini made a save on a Rommel shot from 15 yards out, but SU failed to clear the ball and RU regained possession.  Less then a minute later, Checcio’s shot from in close was saved, and Rodgers picked up the deflected ball only to have his over-the-shoulder shot sail just wide.

Following a ground ball pick up and successful clear by SU, the Orange won the game as Leveille took the ball at the top of the box and dodged past his defender.  His left-handed shot went into the bottom left corner of the goal and gave Syracuse its first win at Yurcak Field since 2002.

Rutgers raced out of the gates in the first quarter, scoring the games first four goal in under eight minutes.  Checcio got on the scoreboard twice in that span and he finished the day with three goals and three assists.  Syracuse answered back with goals by Joe Yevoli and Brett Bucktooth, and the game settled into a back-and-fourth contest.

The Scarlet Knights led 7-6 at halftime, and quickly went head 8-6 on a goal by Josh Ashcraft (Carthage, NY) early in the third quarter.  Syracuse, however, responded 20 seconds later (13:14), beginning a string of six consecutive goals to take a 12-8 lead.

The Rutgers defense held Syracuse scoreless for the entire fourth quarter, outshooting the Orange 16-4 in the period while winning three-of-five face-offs.  Goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 16 saves in the contest while his counterpart, Coluccini, finished with 10 stops.

In addition to the offensive contributions of Gaines and Checcio, Rodgers had four points (one goal, three assists) and Rommel finished with two (one goal, one assist).  Syracuse outshot Rutgers 42-41, but the Scarlet Knights had a 19-5 advantage in the fourth quarter and overtime period.

Rutgers returns to action next Saturday, April 22, when it travels to State College, PA, for a contest against No. 14 Penn State at noon.
