  • BALTIMORE, MD - Junior  Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) matched his career high with three goals, but five unanswered second quarter goals lifted Loyola (4-4, 3-1 ECAC) to a 9-4 victory over Rutgers (5-4, 2-2 ECAC) on a rain-soaked Diane Geppi-Aikens Field in Baltimore, MD on Saturday.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Scarlet Knights, who fell behind 8-1 at halftime but rallied for three second-half goals.  The Greyhounds, who were playing their first home game in over a month, received three goals from Dan Bauers and nine saves from senior goalie Michael Fretwell.

Bauers scored on the Hounds’ first shot - a transition goal that started with a save from Fretwell and ended with a pass from Ryan Rabidou.  Loyola’s early lead would be short lived, however. Rutgers evened the game only 26 seconds later as Josh Ashcraft (Carthage, NY) fired a left-handed shot over the shoulder of Fretwell.  The Greyhounds jumped ahead on Cory Coffman's goal at 7:41 of the first quarter and proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to close the first half.

Ahead 3-1 on goals from Cory Coffman and Tyler Gale, The Greyhounds, who were tied with Maryland for the nation's top man-up offense at the start of the day, got their first extra-man opportunity with a pushing call at the end of the first quarter. Junior Greg Leonard converted in the opening 15 seconds of the second quarter to give Loyola a 4-1 lead.

In the face-off circle, Junior Andrew Spack won all five of the game's second-quarter face-offs as the Greyhounds continued to extend their lead. After a goal from sophomore Paul Richards to push the lead to 6-1, Spack won the ensuing face-off and found Baures for his third goal of the day and Loyola's second goal in five seconds.

Sophomore Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) won six-of-15 face-offs, marking the first time this season that he failed to win at least 50 percent of the draws.  After being outshot 14-7 in the first half, Rutgers got the better of play offensively over the final 30:00, generating 17 shots and converted on an extra-man opportunity late in the fourth quarter.

Rutgers returns to action next Saturday when it hosts 15th-ranked Syracuse (3-4), who defeated sixth-ranked Princeton this afternoon, 7-5.  Opening face-off at Yurcak Field is schedule for noon.  The game can also be seen live on ESPN 360.
