PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman defenseman Chris O’Dougherty (Kinnelon, NJ) has been named the ECAC Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for performance in Rutgers’ 6-3 victory over Stony Brook last Tuesday, the conference office announced today.
O’Dougherty is the second member of the Scarlet Knights in as many weeks to garner ECAC Rookie of the Week honors. Attackman Mike Dugan (Summit, NJ) earned the award last Monday after scoring three goals on a 8-7 overtime victory against Hobart.
O’Dougherty played an instrumental role in limiting a Stony Brook offense that was averaging 10.20 goals per game to its lowest output in over two years. He held SBU’s Jason Cappadoro, the team’s leading scorer and three-time All-America East choice, to just one point. The Rutgers defense, led by O’Dougherty, freshman Chris Gammello (Rockville Centre, NY), sophomore Nick Filippone (Northport, NY) and senior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY), did not give up a goal for the first 32:55 of regulation.
Through seven games, Rutgers ranks fifth nationally in scoring defense (5.86 goals per game), having held three opponents to three goals or less (Butler 2/25, Manhattan 3/14 and Stony Brook 3/28). The Scarlet Knights are also allowing just 29.4 shots per game. In victories over Hobart and Stony Brook, Havalchak made 32 saves and currently is fourth in the nation in save percentage (.640).
An All-American and First Team All-State choice by the Star-Ledger last spring, O’Dougherty anchored a Seton Hall Prep defense that helped the team advance to the NJSIAA Group IV semifinals and finished No. 7 in the final Star-Ledger Top 25 poll. He has started all seven games this year and has 22 ground balls, the third highest total on the team.
Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, April 5, when it faces ECAC foe St. John’s at 7:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights also travel to Baltimore, MD, to take on Loyola on Saturday, April 8 (1:00 p.m.) in a game that will be carried by ESPNU
