  • STONY BROOK, NY – A four-goal second-quarter spurt provided all the offense the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (4-3) would need as senior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made those points stand up, stopping 16 shots in a 6-3 victory over Stony Brook (2-4) before 1,188 at LaValle Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Havalchak, the reigning ECAC Defensive Player of the Week, followed up his 16-save effort last Saturday against Hobart with a performance was equally as impressive, turning away several point-blank scoring opportunities and shutting down a Seawolves offense that came into the game averaging over 10 goals per game.  He made seven saves in the fourth quarter when RU was clinging to a 5-3 lead.  Through seven games, Havalchak has a 5.98 goals-against average and .640 save percentage.

Senior Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA), who scored the game winning goal in overtime last Saturday against Hobart, netted two goals, and a key 2:00 span in the second quarter gave the Scarlet Knights just enough offensive firepower to support Havalchak’s effort between the pipes.  The contest was finally put away when Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, NY) scored unassisted with under 3:00 to play.

Ahead 1-0 after an unassisted goal by Britts with 23 second left in the first quarter, senior Austin Rodgers (Baltimore, MD) converted an extra-man opportunity to extend the lead to 2-0 at 11:02 of the second quarter.  Britts scored again with 8:55 left, dodging towards the cage and ripping a shot from 16 yards out, and junior Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) did the same 1:25 later to make the score 4-0.  On the ensuing face-off, sophomore Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) won cleanly and picked up the ground ball.  He then raced towards the cage and bounced a shot in over the shoulder of SBU goalie Brandon Callahan, making the score 5-0 and giving Rutgers all the momentum it would need.

Rutgers controlled possession for much of the first half, allowing just 12 shots by the Seawolves.  Stony Brook finally broke through and got on the scoreboard when it converted an extra-man opportunity at 13:05 of the third quarter, but would get no closer then 5-3 on a Jason Cappandoro goal early in the fourth period.

The Scarlet Knights defense, led by Havalchak, freshman Chris O’Dougherty (Kinnelon, NJ), freshman Chris Gammello (Rockville Centre, NY) and sophomore Nick Filippone (Northport, NY), contained a high-powered Stony Brook offense all night, forcing 14 turnovers and winning all of the key groundballs in the fourth quarter.

Melanson won seven-of-12 draws and is 70-for-116 on the season (.603) in the face-off X for the year.  Despite not registering a point for the first time this season, Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) continues to be the team’s leading scorer with 16 points, followed closely by Gaines (nine goals, four assists, 13 points) and Britts (seven goals, two assists, nine points).  Stony Brook held a 36-27 advantage in shots, most of which came in the second half as SBU was playing catch-up.

The game served as a homecoming for several members of the RU squad who hail from Long Island, including senior Tom O’Toole (Long Beach, NY), Gammello, Filippone, Chris White (Rockville Centre, NY), John Barrett (West Islip, NY) and Mike DeMeo (Manhasset, NY).

Rutgers returns to action next Wednesday, April 5, when it returns to Yurcak Field to host ECAC foe St. John’s at 7:00 p.m.
