  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA) scored unassisted with just 18 seconds left in overtime to give the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (3-3, 1-1 ECAC) a stirring 8-7 win over 19th-ranked Hobart (3-3, 0-2 ECAC) on Saturday at Yurcak Field.

Britts’ goal capped a rousing comeback by the Scarlet Knights, who trailed 6-3 midway through the third quarter but rallied for four straight goals to take the lead in the final period.  The offensive stars of the afternoon for Rutgers were freshman attack Mike Dugan (Summit, NJ), who scored three times, and junior Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY), who dished out three assists.  In goal, senior Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) came through with a season-high 16 saves, including one with time expiring in the fourth quarter to preserve a 7-7 tie.

Hobart’s Nick Currie netted an unassisted goal at 7:57 of the third quarter to give the Statesmen its largest lead (6-3), but the Scarlet Knights’ offense was just beginning to show signs of life.  Doctor assisted on three consecutive goals over the next 7:49, pulling Rutgers even at 6-6 on a Dugan goal with eight seconds left in the third quarter.  Freshman Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, MD) started the rally with 6:24 to play in the quarter and Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) followed less then a minute later with his eighth goal of the season.

The game remained tied until 9:57 remained in the fourth quarter as Dugan completed his hat trick with a rocketed shot from 12 yards out that beat Hobart goalie Mike DeSantis.  Rutgers’ lead would not last long, however, as Hobart responded just 38 seconds later.  Currie took a pass from Sean Murphy and put the ball in the upper left of the cage, knotting the score at 7-7.  Each team had chances to win the game in regulation, including a man-up situation for RU that Hobart successfully killed off.  Havalchak provided all the defensive presence the Scarlet Knights would need, making five key saves in the final stanza.

Sophomore Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) won the opening face-off of overtime, and Rutgers quickly called timeout to set up a play.  Gaines blasted a shot from 15 yards out on the ensuing possession (3:12), but it was saved by DeSantis.  The Statesmen failed to clear the ball out of their zone, however, and the miscue would prove costly.  After a scramble for the loose ball, Rutgers eventually regained possession with 2:42 to play.  After holding for a final shot and getting two key ground ball pickups, Rutgers won the game when Britts’ shot sliced past DeSantis and into the net, sending the RU sideline and a crowd of 1,246 into celebration.

Saturday’s victory was Rutgers’ eighth over a ranked opponent in the Jim Stagnitta era.  Hobart was 19th in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and receiving votes in the USILA/Geico Top 20.

In addition to the heroics of Dugan, Britts and Doctor, Gaines and Stanwick each had two goals while Austin Rodgers (Baltimore, MD), Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, NY) and Chris White (Rockville Centre, NY) added assists.  The Scarlet Knights outshot Hobart 41-39 and won 10-of-18 face-offs.    Daryl Veltman, the reigning ECAC Rookie of the Year, had three goals for Hobart.  He scored twice in a nine-second span late in the second quarter that gave the Statesmen a 5-3 halftime lead.

Rutgers returns to action on Tuesday, March 28, when it travels to Stony Brook (2-3) for a 7:00 game against the Seawolves.
