  • WEST POINT, NY - Despite outshooting Army 30-21 and winning nine-of-12 face-offs, the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (2-3) suffered a 5-4 setback at the hands of the Black Knights on Saturday at Michie Stadium in West Point, NY.

Trailing 5-3 late in the fourth quarter, junior Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) netted his second goal of the game and pulled RU within one with 33 seconds left.  Sophomore Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) won the ensuring face-off and Rutgers called a time-out, setting up what it hoped would be a game-tying goal.  Army’s defense forced a turnover, however, and the Black Knights picked up the ground ball and ran out the clock.

In a defensive battle, Rutgers and Army traded goals in the first quarter.  Army’s Ryan Chase gave the Black Knights a 1-0 lead at the 13:10 mark of the opening quarter, but junior Matt Gaines scored his sixth goal in the past three games to tie the score at 1-1.  Just 10 seconds later (10:30), Tony Vozzolo scored unassisted and Army took its 2-1 lead into the second quarter.

Doctor converted an extra-man opportunity at 13:15 of the second quarter off an assist by Gaines, but Kevin LoRusso beat the clock at the end of the first half and Army led 3-2 at intermission.  The only goal of the third quarter was scored by All-America John Walker to give the Black Knights a 4-2 edge, and the two teams settled into their defensive battle until Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, NY) netted a goal at the 5:54 mark of the fourth quarter.

Melanson continued to be impressive in the face-off circle, winning nine-of-12 draws.  Through five games, he’s won 53-of-86 face-offs (.616).  Doctor added to his team-leading point total and now has nine goals and four assists for 13 points, which already matches his goal output for the entire 2005 season.  Gaines is Rutgers’ second-leading scorer with nine points (six goals, three assists) and all of his offensive production has come in the past three games.

Senior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made nine saves, including five in the fourth quarter.  His counterpart, Adam Fullerton, stopped 10 shots.  The Scarlet Knights’ defensive effort held Walker, an All-American last season as he helped Army advance to the NCAA Tournament, to just one goal on five shots.

Rutgers is back in action next Saturday, March 25, when it hosts ECAC foe Hobart at 1:00 p.m.
