  • PISCATAWAY, NJ  – Eight different players tallied multiple points as the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (2-2) scored 13 unanswered goals and held Manhattan (2-3) scoreless for the final 46:13 of regulation in a 15-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.

Senior attackman Austin Rodgers (Baltimore, MD), junior midfielder Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) and junior midfielder Josh Ashcraft (Carthange, NY) all finished with four points.  Rodgers and Gaines had two goals and two assists while Ashcraft had a goal and three assists.  Senior Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA), junior Colin Checcio (Wayne, PA) and freshman Mike Dugan (Summit, NJ) each had three points while freshman Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, MD) and junior Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) finished with two points.

Just four days after generating 40 shots against Fairfield, the Rutgers offense fired 47 shots against Mahattan goalies Justin Henry and Keith O’Connor.  Rutgers’ top goal scorers were Checcio and Dugan, who each notched hat tricks.  Rodgers, Gaines and Britts had two goals while Ashcraft, Doctor and Stanwick finished with one apiece.

On the defensive end, the Jaspers had just 10 shots in the first three quarters and didn’t score after the 1:13 mark of the second quarter.  Sophomore Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) had another solid day in the face-off X, winning 12-of-19 draws and picking up four ground balls.  As a team, the Scarlet Knights had a season-high 38 ground balls.  Senior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made six saves before being relieved in the fourth quarter by sophomore Lyle Farrar (Lexington, VA) and freshman Peter Pantages (Roseland, NJ).

Manhattan went ahead early in the first quarter on a Jack O’Malley goal. The lead was short lived, however, as Gaines scored unassisted 23 seconds later.  Rutgers and Manhattan traded goals for the remainder of the quarter before Britts took a pass from Rodgers and gave RU a 3-2 lead with two seconds left in the opening stanza.

Satnwick’s first career goal gave RU a 4-2 edge in the second quarter, and the Scarlet Knights would score four more times in the period to take a 8-2 lead at intermission.  Rutgers’ goals came from four different players in that span, including when Checcio converted on an extra-man opportunity.

The second half was more of the same for RU on the offensive end, as Rodgers and Gaines scored in the first four minutes of the third quarter to push the lead to 10-2.  Dugan and Checcio each scored two of their three goals in the second half, as Rutgers closed out the scoring at the 8:15 mark of the fourth quarter.

Through four games, Doctor leads Rutgers with 11 points (seven goals, four assists) while Ashcraft has eight points (two goals, six assists) and three other players – Checcio, Gaines and Rodgers – has chipped in with seven points.  The Scarlet Knights have outshot their first four opponents 148-110 and have won 44-of-76 face-offs (.579).

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, March 18, when it ventures to West Point, NY, to face Army at 1:00 p.m.  The Scarlet Knights will be seeing their first win over Army since 1998.
