  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Sean Morris added to his ECAC-leading point total with a game-high five goals and one assist as eighth-ranked Massachusetts (12-2, 5-1 ECAC) scored five fourth-quarter goals to pull away for a 13-7 victory over Rutgers (4-9, 1-5 ECAC) on Saturday afternoon at Yurcak Field.

With a crowd of 806 on hand to honor the Scarlet Knights’ Class of 2005, senior attacker Robert Miller (Seaford, NY) and the rest of his teammates came out inspired in the first quarter. Miller netted two goals in the first nine minutes to stake RU to an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) scored what appeared to be Rutgers’ third consecutive goal three minutes later in the quarter, but the officials ruled that he was in the crease and disallowed the score. The Minutemen rattled off three consecutive scores – one by Morris and one by senior Jeff Zywicki – to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the quarter.

Senior Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) tied the game with his 12th goal of the season off a feed from fellow senior Sean Battoni (Ringoes, NJ) at the 9:20 mark of the second quarter, but Morris responded one minute later with his second goal of the game. Brett Mooney (Springfield, PA) scored with 7:11 remaining before halftime to make the score 4-4, but the Minutemen netted four goals over the final six and a half minutes of the second quarter to take a 8-4 lead at intermission.

The only goal of the third quarter was scored by Blomquist, who brought Rutgers within three, 8-5, with 6:43 to play in the stanza. After the Minutemen had taken 25 shots in the first half, the Rutgers defense held Massachusetts to just four in the third quarter.

A Battoni goal three minutes into the fourth quarter make the score 8-6, but Morris and Zywicki combined to score four goals over a four-minute span that gave Massachusetts a 11-7 lead with 7:21 remaining. Mooney scored RU’s lone fourth-quarter goal on a man-up situation.

Miller led the Scarlet Knights attack with three points (two goals, one assist) while Battoni added one goal and one assist. Blomquist finished the 2005 season Rutgers’ leading scorer with 32 points (13 goals, 19 assists). Over his final three seasons, he registered 57 assists and finishes his four-year career with 112 points (52 goals, 60 assists). Battoni, Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) and Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) combined to win 12-of-24 face-offs. Battoni finished his senior campaign with 13 goals and three assists.

On defense, freshman Lyle Farrar (Lexington, VA) made 13 saves in his first collegiate start, including eight in the second half. Gaines picked up a team-high seven ground balls and the RU defense held Massachusetts scoreless for a span of 20:47 in the second half. Farrar’s counterpart, Efosa Guobodia, also made his first career start and stopped 14 shots filling in for Bill Schell, who was out with a hand injury. The Minutemen offense, which ranked first in the ECAC in goals per game, outshot Rutgers 40-35. With the win, Massachusetts claimed its third conference title in the past six years. Morris now has 39 goals and 22 assists for 61 points.
