  • WASHINGTON, DC – A six-goal second-half spurt by sixth-ranked Georgetown (9-3, 4-1 ECAC) lifted the Hoyas to a 14-7 victory over Rutgers (4-8, 1-4 ECAC) on Saturday afternoon in men’s lacrosse action in Washington, DC.

Georgetown took a early 2-0 lead on goals from Nick Miaritis and Sean Denihan, but the Scarlet Knights came storming back when freshman Nate Sanderson (Orangeville, Ontario) scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season. Sean Battoni (Ringoes, NJ) beat GU goalie Rich D’Andrea on a man-up situation midway though the first quarter that knotted the game at 2-2, but Georgetown took a 3-2 lead at the end of the period when Pete Cannon scored off an assist from his brother, Bandon Cannon.

Trevor Casey’s goal at 8:45 of the second period gave Georgetown a two-goal cushion (4-2), but John Manners (Springfield, PA) connected on his first goal of the season – an unassisted tally – six minutes later. Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) scored a fast-break goal – his 11th of the season – when he pick up a loose ground ball and rocketed a shot past D’Andrea to tie the score with 1:31 remaining in the first half. Bryce Queener gave GU a 5-4 halftime lead when he scored after a Rutgers turnover in the Hoya’s offensive end with eight seconds left.

Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) and Battoni combined to win five-of-11 face-offs in the first half against GU’s Andy Corno, who leads the nation in face-off percentage. The Scarlet Knights also outshot the Hoyas in the first half, 22-20.

Cannon third goal of the game (2:12, third quarter) gave Georgetown a three-goal lead (8-5), and Casey quickly added to the advantage when it scored from 15 yards out. In all, the Hoyas scored four third-quarter goals and won all six face-offs in the period. Rutgers’ lone tally came from Gaines, his fifth of the season.

Keith Schroeder, Miatritis, Andrew Baird and Matt Wilson each scored goals in the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter that gave Georgetown its largest lead of the game (13-5). Lyle Farrar (Lexington, VA) relieved Havalchak in goal in the final five minutes, making three saves.

Rutgers returns to action next Saturday, May 7, when it hosts eighth-ranked Massachusetts at Yurcak Field. Opening face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
