PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman attacker Nate Sanderson (Orangeville, Ontario) has been named the ECAC men’s lacrosse Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today.
Sanderson had five goals as the Scarlet Knights went 1-1 last week, including a career-high four-goal effort in a 9-6 victory over St. John’s. Sanderson added one tally in a 10-5 loss to Loyola at Yurcak Field last Saturday.
Against the Red Storm, Sanderson forced a 2-2 tie with a fast-break goal with 46 seconds left in the first half, and then put Rutgers ahead for good when he took a pass from Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) at the 12:17 mark of the second quarter. He added goals in the third and fourth quarter, respectively, as the Scarlet Knights pulled away from the Red Storm.
Since earning his first career start on March 19 against Army, Sanderson has been on a tear, scoring 13 goals over a five-game span. In a 16-10 loss to No. 14 Hobart, he had four goals, just four days after he had three tallies against Stony Brook. He currently leads the ECAC in goals per game (2.60) and is seventh in points per game (2.60).
Sanderson is the second member of the Scarlet Knights to earn ECAC weekly honors, joining Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY), who was the Defensive Player of the Week on March 7.
Rutgers (3-5, 1-2 ECAC) returns to action on Saturday, April 9, when it hosts Princeton. Opening face-off at Yurcak Field is slated for 3:00 p.m. The game can be seen live in CN8 television.
