  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The duo of Jason Cappadoro and Adam Marksberry combined to score seven goals as 18th-ranked Stony Brook (4-1) held off a fierce rally by 16th-ranked Rutgers (2-3) to earn a 13-9 victory over the Scarlet Knights in men’s lacrosse action on Tuesday evening in Piscataway.

Trailing 9-4 late in the third period, senior attacker Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) intercepted a pass in Stony Brook territory and scored to give Rutgers renewed life. The score remained 9-5 nearly four minutes into the fourth quarter when John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) rocketed a shot past SBU goalie Brendan Callahan. Less than a minute later, Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) scored, and suddenly Rutgers had seized momentum and trailed by just two, 9-7.

The Seawolves converted on a key man-up opportunity when Cappadoro scored with 9:22 to play that made the score 10-7, but Rutgers was able to counter with a goal from Blomquist less than a minute later. Stony Brook goals from Larry Cerasi, Cappadoro and Marksberry in the final 6:25 of the fourth quarter provided the Seawolves with enough offense to earn the hard-fought victory.

SBU stormed out of the gates to take a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Unfazed, Rutgers got back into the game after freshman Nate Sanderson (Orangeville, Ontario) netted two of his team-high three goals within three minutes of each other during the first quarter. Bo Tripodi scored with 14:07 to open the scoring in the second quarter, but back-to-back goals from Matt Gaines (Abington, MD) and Sanderson cut the lead to 5-4. Stony Brook rattled off four straight goals from the 3:14 mark of the second quarter until 1:00 remained in the third quarter.

Aside from Sanderson’s three tallies, Blomquist finished with five points (two goals, three assists) while Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) had a goal and two assists. On defense, junior Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 11 saves. After winning just four face-offs in the first half, Rutgers won seven-of-12 draws in the second half.

For SBU, Marksberry had six points (three goals, three assists) and seven different players scored at least one goal. Callahan made eight saves and Jim Astea won 11-of-17 face-offs.

Rutgers will be back in action on Saturday, March 26, when it travels to Geneva, NY, to face 14th-ranked Hobart in its ECAC opener. Opening face-off at McCooey Field is set for noon.
