  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Army’s Jake Couch scored three goals as eighth-ranked Army (3-1) held on for a hard-fought 8-6 victory over No. 14 Rutgers (2-2) on Saturday before 1,403 fans in Piscataway.

The Black Knights’ Justin Bokmeyer opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first quarter, as he fired a shot past Rutgers goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY). The Scarlet Knights answered, however, and received the first of two goals from Sean Battoni (Ringoes, NJ) to even the score with 6:47 to play in the first quarter. Army grabbed a 2-1 lead of Couch’s first goal of the game later in the period (4:26), and took that advantage into the second quarter.

An unassisted goal from Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) knotted the score at 2-2 with 13:33 remaining in the first half, but the Black Knights scored two goals in a 2:10 span to take a 4-2 lead with 8:00 left. Back-to-back goals from Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) and Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA) came just 39 seconds apart to tie the score at 4-4 with 6:08 left in the second quarter, but Army received goals from John Walker and Couch to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.

Army’s Erik Mineo won the opening face-off of the third period, scooped up the ground ball and scored to give the Black Knights a three-goal lead, 7-4. Battoni answered less than a minute later (13:48), but it proved to be the only offense of the quarter as the two teams settled into a defensive battle.

With Rutgers trailing 8-5, freshman Nate Sanderson (Orangeville, Ontario) netted his first career goal with 56 seconds left to play off a feed from Blomquist. Army won the ensuing face-off, however, and ran the clock out. Havalchak registered a season-high 16 saves, while his counterpart, Adam Fullerton, had seven saves in his first collegiate start. Army outshot Rutgers 38-26, but the Scarlet Knights held an 18-11 advantage in the second half. Freshman Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) won seven-of-14 face-offs.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Tuesday, March 22, when they host No. 22 Stony Brook at the Rutgers Stadium Complex. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
