  • TOWSON, MD – Playing its first Top 25 opponent of the 2005 season, the 14th-Rutgers men’s lacrosse team suffered a 7-6 setback against the 13th-ranked Towson Tigers on Tuesday evening at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, MD.

In a tight defensive battle, senior Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) scored an extra-man goal with 1:08 to play that brought the Scarlet Knights (2-1) within one, but Towson (4-1) won the ensuing face-off and ran the clock out to secure the win. Rutgers’ offensive efforts were led by Blomquist (two goals, one assist) and John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) (two goals, two assists).

Sophomore Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) gave Rutgers a 1-0 first-quarter lead when he tallied his sixth goal of the season. Towson tied the contest at 1-1 less than 20 seconds into the second quarter, but Flanagan beat Towson goalie Reed Sothoron for the first of his two goals. The Tigers netted the final two goals of the half to take a 3-2 lead at intermission.

Towson’s lead grew to two goals (4-2) when sophomore Todd MacMullan netted the second of his three scores midway though the third quarter, but Rutgers’ offense awoke to put together a three-goal rally, beginning with an even-strength score from sophomore defensemen Mike Sissler (Franklin Lakes, NJ) followed by goals from Blomquist and Flanagan to give RU a 5-4 edge with 13:00 to play in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers scored twice in a two-minute span between 12:53 and 11:25 in the final stanza to go ahead 6-5, and added an important insurance goal by Kyle Batton with 4:34 to play in the fourth quarter. The game was marred by a total of 14 penalties, nine of which were called on Towson. Rutgers converted four of its nine extra-man opportunities.

In goal, junior Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made all eight of his saves in the first half. Towson’s Matt Eckerl controlled the face-off X, winning 13-of-16 draws. The Tigers outshot Rutgers 30-25, but had just 15 shots in the first, third and fourth quarters combined.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, March 19, when they host eighth-ranked Army at 1:00 p.m. at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.
