  • NEWARK, DE – Senior midfielder Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) scored with 45 seconds left and junior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made three saves in the final minute to help the 12th-ranked Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (1-0) to a 8-7 season-opening victory over Delaware (2-2) at Rullo Stadium on Saturday.

The Blue Hens’ Vincent Giordano netted a goal with 3:53 remaining the give UD a 7-6 edge. Delaware won the ensuing face-off, but turned the ball over on its possession. Brett Mooney (Springfield, PA) made UD pay for its miscue, firing a shot past goalie Chris Collins with 1:54 to play that tied the game.

Freshman Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD) won the next face-off to give RU possession, but sophomore Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) had his shot blocked with 47 second left. Lovejoy, however, picked up the ground ball and put the game-winning goal past Collins and into the back of the net.

With 45 seconds to play, Delaware won the face-off and advanced the ball upfield where Alex Smith and Dave Powers each had chances to tie the game, but Havalchak snuffed out both opportunities. Andy Hipple had a final opportunity for the Blue Hens as time expired, only to be denied by Havalchak, who finished with 12 saves – six in the fourth quarter.

After playing to a 3-3 tie at halftime, Rutgers ripped off three straight goals in the third quarter to take a 6-3 lead. Senior Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) started the rally at the 14:03 mark, followed nearly one minute later by junior Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA). Colin Checcio (Radnor, PA) scored with 11:01 to play in the period, but Delaware scored the game’s next four goals, beginning with a score from Jordan Hall at the end of the third quarter.

Doctor finished with two goals while Britts, Blomquist, Lovejoy, Mooney, Checcio and Robert Miller (Seaford, NY) each had one goal. Senior John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) had a career-high three assists. On defense, junior Tom O’Toole (Long Beach, NY) picked up a team-high four ground balls.

Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, March 9, when it hosts Manhattan at the Rutgers Stadium Complex. Opening face-off is schedule for 3:00 p.m.
