  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team has been picked 12th in the annual Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook preseason poll, the organization announced today. The poll was compiled from 56 coach’s surveys.

Rutgers returns six starters in 2005, including junior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY), a second-team preseason All-America selection. The Scarlet Knights also feature senior attacker Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY), who had a team-best 38 points last spring, and sophomore attacker Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY), a two-time ECAC Rookie of the Week who notched 20 points last year.

Rutgers is the second-highest ranked team among ECAC members, behind only defending conference champion Georgetown. In all, the Scarlet Knights’ schedule features games against nine teams that are ranked in the Top 25, including Syracuse, Princeton, Georgetown, Towson, Army, Loyola, Hobart, Penn State and Massachusetts.

Johns Hopkins, which ended the 2004 regular season as the nation’s top-ranked team and advanced to the Final Four, received 35 first-place votes to rank first, followed by defending national champion Syracuse (19 first-place votes). NCAA semifinalist Princeton is third, followed by Navy, Maryland and Georgetown.

Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Jim Stagnitta, Rutgers begins its 2005 season on Saturday, March 6, against Delaware. Rutgers finished its 2004 season 8-6 overall and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. The Scarlet Knights played five ranked opponents and were ranked in the Top 15 of the USILA coach's poll every week of the regular season.
