  • PRINCETON, NJ – Ryan Boyle scored a career-high four goals as the Princeton Tigers raced out to a 8-2 halftime lead and defeated Rutgers, 12-4, on Saturday at PU’s Class of 1952 Stadium. The Scarlet Knights conclude their season with a record of 8-6, while Princeton (10-3) advances to next Saturday’s NCAA Quarterfinal in Charlottesville, VA.

After Princeton scored twice to begin the first quarter, Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) made the score 2-1 with just over a minute to play in the quarter, but PU won the ensuing face-off and Boyle gave the Tigers a two-goal lead, 3-1, after scoring with just six seconds remaining.

Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) was the star of the first quarter, as he made five spectacular saves to keep Princeton at bay. His fifth save came as Boyle fired a shot from point-blank range at him.

Boyle scored twice and dished out two assists on as the Tigers scored five goals in the second quarter. Princeton’s final two goals were within 10 seconds of each other late in the quarter. Rutgers’ lone goal in the quarter came from John Manners (Springfield, PA), who scored for the first time this season.

Princeton’s lead grew to eight goals, 11-3, after Peter Trombino poked a shot past Havalchak in the third quarter. Manners netted his second goal of the game off a feed from Blomquist to make the score 11-4 entering the fourth quarter.

On defense, seniors Andrew Conforti (Ringoes, NJ) and Joe Duncan (Mountain Lakes, NJ) each started for the 42nd consecutive game.

Havalchak made eight saves, giving him 172 on the season, the 16th highest total in single-season history. The Tigers won 11-of-20 face-offs, and Rutgers held a 30-29 advantage in shots. Leading-scorer Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) was held without a goal for just the second time this season. He scored 62 goals in his two seasons as a Scarlet Knight.

For Rutgers, the back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances mark the first time since 1990, 1991 that the Scarlet Knights have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons.
