  • PRINCETON, NJ – Princeton’s Ryan Boyle had a goal and four assists as the sixth-ranked Tigers used a key 4-0 run in the third quarter to defeat No. 14 Rutgers, 9-7, on Saturday at Princeton’s Class of 1952 Stadium.

Rutgers falls to 6-3 overall as the Tigers (5-2) won for the 15th consecutive time in the series. Despite the loss, the Scarlet Knights received a goal and two assists from senior midfielder Tim White (Rockville Center, NY).

Playing in front of a near-capacity crowd of 3,414, the Tigers came out of the gate quickly, netting the games first three goals, including two from Jason Doneger. Rutgers had plenty of offense left in it, however, as it rattled of four-straight goals over the remaining 17:58 of the first half.

Austin Rodgers (Towson, MD) started the offensive blitz with an unassisted goal with 1:15 to play in the first quarter, and John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) made the score 3-2 early in the seconds quarter. Three minutes later, Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) netted his 25th goal of the season to tie the game. For the remainder of the first half, the team settled into a defensive battle, but White gave RU a 4-3 lead when his shot trickled past Princeton goalie Dave Law with 12 seconds to play before halftime.

The Tigers began the second half with a man-up opportunity, and quickly took advantage when Erik Kudla scored from 15 yards out. Princeton then scored three more times to open a 7-4 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Boyle gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game (8-4) 20 seconds into the final quarter, but Rutgers battled back and notched back-to-back goals with under five minutes to play in regulation. Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) rocketed a shot past Law to start the rally, and Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) scored at the 3:11 mark of the fourth to make the score 8-6.

The Tigers netted an insurance goal with 2:43 to play, and Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 2:05 remaning. Rutgers had a scoring opportunity in the final minute, but Doctor’s shot hit the goal pipe and bounced out of bounds.

In goal, sophomore Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 10 saves. Dan Achatz (Seaford, NY) had a team-high four ground balls.

The Scarlet Knights return to action next Saturday, April 17, when they host third-ranked Syracuse at Yurcak Field. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
