  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Sophomore Austin Rodgers (Towson, MD) and junior John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) each had two goals and two assists as 14th-ranked Rutgers earned a hard-fought 10-6 win over Manhattan on Tuesday evening at Yurcak Field. With the win, the Scarlet Knights improve to 6-2 overall.

Rutgers dominated play in the first quarter, scoring the games first three goals and outshooting Manhattan 13-2. Senior Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) netted an unassisted goal with 12:20 to play, followed by the first career goal from freshman defensemen Daren Ohiokpehai (Lutherville, MD), who beat Manhattan goalie John Landers. Freshman Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) made the score 3-0 when he took a feed from Flanagan with 7:21 left in the first quarter.

Midway through the second period, Rutgers made the score 4-0 on Flanagan’s first goal of the night, but Manhattan fought back when Justin Otto scored his only goal of the night. Rutgers took a 4-1 lead into the locker room and outshot the Jaspers 21-7 in the first half.

Manhattan drew to within two, 4-2, with four minutes gone in the third quarter, but Rutgers responded with scores from Flanagan and Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) to build a 6-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) gave RU its largest lead of the game (7-2) at the 13:58 mark of the fourth quarter, but Manhattan proved to have plenty of offense left in it. Greg Lewis scored for the Jaspers just 24 scores after Blomqust, pulling Manhattan to within four. Brian Murray and Nick Cacciatore then raddled off back-to-back scores and the score was suddenly 7-5 with just over 10 minutes to play.

Any hope of a Manhattan comeback was squashed when Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) scored off a feed from Flanagan. Rodgers added an insurance goal with 7:16 to play and closed out the scoring with a goal at the 2:27 mark of the fourth quarter.

In net, goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made seven saves. Aside from his goal, Ohiokpehai also contributed with four ground balls. Freshman Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD) won 11-of-17 face-offs and had five ground balls.

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, April 10, when it travels to sixth-ranked Princeton at noon. The game can be seen live on CSTV.
