PISCATAWAY, NJ – Sophomore goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) has been named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today.
Havalchak earned the award for his performance in Rutgers’ 7-6 triple overtime win against Farifeld, a game in which he stopped 20 shots. The 20 saves is the second-highest total in his career, behind a 22-save outing against Dartmouth on Feb. 28. After making his 20th save, Havalchak cleared the ball to defensemen Andrew Conforti (Ringoes, NJ), who passed to Tim White (Rockville Center, NY), leading to the eventual game-winning goal.
The reigning ECAC Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Havalchak currently leads the conference in save percentage (.686), saves (94) and goals-against average (6.21). Nationally, he ranks sixth in goals-against average and third in save percentage.
The Scarlet Knights return to action tomorrow, as they host Manhattan at Yurcak Field. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Rutgers travels to face No. 7 Princeton at noon in a game that can be seen live on CSTV.
