  • FAIRFIELD, CT – Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) scored an unassisted goal with 12 seconds to play in the third overtime lifting Rutgers to a dramatic 7-6 victory over Fairfield on Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium. The win snaps a two-game losing streak and marked the longest game RU has played since a 10-9 quadruple overtime win over Princeton in 1981.

White’s tally after goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made his 20th save of the game and cleared the ball to Andrew Conforti (Ringoes, NJ). White was streaking up the left sideline, and put the ball past Fairfield goalie Corey Gibbons to give Rutgers (5-2) the marathon victory.

Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) netted four goals, while White had a goal and three assists. Powless’ four goals gives him a team-high 27 points (23 goals, four assists). White now has 21 points on the season (10 goals, 11 assists).

Powless started the scoring midway through the first quarter, as he took a feed from Colin Checcio (Wayne, PA) give Rutgers a 1-0 lead. The Scarlet Knights added another tally when Powless beat Gibbons and Sean Battoni (Ringoes, NJ) scored his second goal of the season to stake Rutgers to an early 3-0 lead.

The Stags scored the first goal of the second quarter at the 11:27 mark, but Rutgers responded with back-to-back goals from Blomquist and Powless. Rutgers converted on a man-up opportunity when Powless scored on a feed from White with 5:10 to play before halftime to take a 6-1 lead, an advantage RU eventually took into the locker room at halftime.

Fairfield netted the first two goals of the second half to draw to within three, 6-3, at the nine minute mark of the third period. Rutgers had several scoring opportunities in the quarter, but the Stags defense was equal to the task. Fairfield scored a pair of goals within a minute of each other to make the score 6-5 entering the fourth quarter.

The Stags tied the game at the 8:06 mark of the fourth quarter, but that proved to be the only scoring of the quarter. With less then a minute to play, Rutgers had two shots on goal, but Fairfield made both saves to send the game into overtime.

Blomqust had a potential-game winning goal saved on the first shot of overtime, and the Fairfield defense snuffed out three other RU scoring opportunities. In the second overtime, Battoni won the initial face-off, and RU dominated play on its offensive end, but couldn’t put any of its four shots in the goal.

On the defensive end, freshman Daren Ohiokpehai (Lutherville, MD) and Conforti each had four ground balls. Havalchak’s 20 saves is his second-highest total of the season, behind a 22-save effort in the season-opener against Dartmouth.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Tuesday, April 6, when they hosts Manhattan at Yurcak Field. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
