PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Towson Tigers scored four unanswered goals in the fourth period to earn a 7-4 victory over 10th-ranked Rutgers before 1,191 fans on Saturday at Yurcak Field. With the loss, the Scarlet Knights fall to 4-2. Despite the setback, sophomore goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 15 saves, including eight in the second half.
Trailing by a goal entering the fourth quarter, the Tigers evened the score with 12:29 to play in the game and took the lead for good with 7:01 left, as Keith Obloj scored an unassisted goal. Towson added a fast-break goal with 5:45 remaining that gave it a two-goal edge, 6-4, and added another tally with 27 seconds to play in regulation.
Rutgers’ Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) opened the scoring 2:41 into the game, as he took a feed from Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) to give RU an early 1-0 lead. Apel’s goal proved to be the only offense of the first quarter, as both the Scarlet Knights and Tigers settled into a defensive battle.
Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) made the score 2-0 when he beat Towson goalkeeper Mark DeGroat with 12:21 to play in the second quarter off a pass from Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY). Towson responded with two goals within a minute of each other late in the quarter, but Rutgers led 3-2 at halftime as Powless scored with 34 seconds to play in the quarter.
Apel scored his second goal of the game to make the score 4-2 just three minutes into the third quarter. Towson pulled to within one, 4-3, at the end of the quarter when Jonathan Engelke found the back of the net with two seconds remaining.
Towson held a 35-27 advantage in shots, including a 22-12 edge in shots on goal.
Rutgers returns to action on Thursday, April 1, when it travels to Fairfield, CT, to face the Stags at 7:00 p.m.
