  • WEST POINT, NY – Junior Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) scored with 23 seconds remaining to pull within one, but the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team could not muster the tying score in a 12-11 loss to No. 15 Army at Shea Stadium in West Point, NY. The defeat is the first of the season for the Scarlet Knights, ending a four-game win streak.. Army improves to 4-1.

Army jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of quick goals to open the contest. Rutgers responded, however, scoring three of the next four goals to tie the game at 3-3 as the first quarter came to a close.

Senior Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) scored off a feed from senior Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) for the first of his game-high four-goals on the afternoon, to put Rutgers on the board. The Scarlet Knights scored the final two goals of the opening quarter with sophomore Brett Mooney (Springfield, MA) putting home a Tim White (Rockville Ctr, NY) feed and Robert Miller (Seaford, NY) connecting on an Apel pass for the tying score.

Army surged out to a 6-4 lead in the second frame scoring three of the four goals in the quarter. Junior Sean Battoni (Ringoes, NJ) had the lone Rutgers goal in the quarter as RU took the two-goal deficit into halftime.

Once again, Rutgers fought back with two quick goals to tie the match and outscored the Black Knights 5-1 in the third quarter. Junior Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) got things started for RU with an unassisted goal 2:16 into the third quarter. Powless scored the next two goals off assists from Lovejoy and White. John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) capped the run with a goal of a Blomquist feed with 1:12 remaining in the third period.

Rutgers entered the fourth quarter up 8-7, but Army did its biggest damage in the final period. The Black Knights scored the first four goals of the quarter to capture an 11-8 lead with just over seven minutes to play.

Powless scored off a Blomquist feed and White added a goal for the game’s next two scores to pull Rutgers within one at 11-10 with 3:20 remaining.

Army’s Tory Sokul scored what proved to be the game-winning tally 17 seconds later, putting Army up 12-10. Blomquist scored his lone goal of the afternoon with 23 seconds left but Army held on for the 12-11 victory.

RU goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) registered 12 saves and seven ground balls between the pipes, while his counterpart, Matt Darak, had 20 stops for Army. Rutgers out-shot Army, 50-34, and held a 14-13 edge in face-offs in the contest.

Rutgers returns home to face No. 19 Towson next Saturday at Yurcak Field at 2:30 p.m. in a game televised by CN8.
