  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 31, 2014) –The All-Big East Academic Team was announced on Thursday, with 67 Rutgers student-athletes from three sports recognized. Overall 2,091 honorees from the conference’s 10 member institutions and five affiliates were recognized.

The men’s lacrosse team led the way with 28 selections, the most ever under head coach Brian Brecht. In its final season in the Big East, Rutgers made the conference tournament for the first time in program history. The squad won eight games in its first winning season since 2004, and garnered four All-Big East selections, which was the most in program history.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these exceptional student-athletes,” Brecht said. “Scott Walker and Bill Bailey do a great job in assisting our players academically and it shows with the success our program has had in the classroom the past few years.  Twenty-eight All-Academic players are the most we have had since I’ve been here. I am excited we were able to perform at such a high level both on the field and in the classroom this past year.”

To be named to the all-academic team, a nominee must have competed in a Big East-sponsored sport, attained a minimum GPA of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.

This season, Rutgers will play in the newly-formed Big Ten lacrosse conference. The six-team league includes sport affiliate member Johns Hopkins, as well as Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.
