PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman attacker Colin Checcio (Wayne, PA) of the Rutgers University men’s lacrosse team has been named the ECAC Riddell Lacrosse Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today.
Checcio was one of many bright spots in Rutgers’ 12-4 rout of Delaware, as he scored one goal and dished out two assists. In the second quarter, Checcio scored an extra-man goal and then handed out back-to-back assists as Rutgers broke the game open with a 7-2 halftime lead.
Through the first two games of the season, Checcio has four points (one goal, three assists). Against Dartmouth on Feb. 28, he had an assist in RU’s 13-9 victory.
Checcio came to Rutgers after a standout career at Radnor High School, where he was named the Main Line Times Player of the Year in 2003 for shattering his own school record for goals in a season with 68 (the previous record was 50, accomplished during his sophomore season). A 2003 High School All-American, Checcio graduated as Radnor’s all-time leader in goals (157) and points (250).
Rutgers, which is ranked fourth this week in the USILA coaches poll and Inside Lacrosse media poll, travels to Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday, March 10, before hosting Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 13, at 1:00 p.m.
