PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 9, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team is set to head to Baltimore, Md., for the 2013 Blue Jays Fall Tournament, hosted by future Big Ten opponent Johns Hopkins on Sunday, Oct. 13. The Scarlet Knights first take on UMass at 11 a.m. before facing Fairfield at 1 p.m. Both fall scrimmage games will take place on Homewood Field.
RU, led by third-year head coach Brian Brecht, returns nine out of 10 starters from a season ago. The squad also welcomes back 98.3 percent of its point scorers, as well as 88.6 percent of its ground ball totals from 2013.
“I have been very pleased with the effort and the pace of play this fall,” said Brecht. “Having a chance to compete against two different colored jerseys this weekend will help us greatly as we head into the offseason and prepare for the 2014 season. I am excited to see how the returning guys have grown since last spring and how the young players handle their first Division I experience.”
The Scarlet Knights have key position players coming back, including the 2013 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in sophomore Kris Alleyne (New City, N.Y.) and a 2013 Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in junior faceoff specialist Joe Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.). Alleyne finished the season fourth nationally with 14.00 saves per game and sixth in the country with a .596 save percentage. Nardella was dominant, ranking fourth in the country in faceoff win percentage (.622) and ground balls per game (8.40).
Offensively, senior Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) led the team last season with 32 goals and 39 points. Five players will serve as team captains for the upcoming season, including: senior D Nick Contino (Branchburg, N.J.), junior M Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Nardella, senior D Andrew Parrilla (Wyckoff, N.J.) and senior M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.).
UMass posted a 7-8 record in 2013 and made the CAA Tournament Semifinals. The squad returns two of its top four scorers in Grant Whiteway (32pts) and Connor Money (29pts).
The Stags went 8-7 in 2013, making the ECAC Lacrosse League Championship. Offensively, senior Jordan Greenfield comes back after leading the team with 42 points in 2013.
The Scarlet Knights will host alumni for a tailgate on Oct. 26, as Rutgers football takes on Houston for its homecoming game. The tailgate will begin three hours prior to kickoff. Alumni can RSVP to Theresa Randise (email@example.com) in the men’s lacrosse office.
