WASHINGTON (April 27, 2012) – Despite hat tricks from senior co-captain M Will Mangan (Maplewood, N.J) and redshirt sophomore A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.), the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team was unable to top Georgetown in RU’s regular season finale, falling by a score of 13-8 at Multi-Sport Field. The Scarlet Knights also had scoring plays executed by senior A Kevin Hover (Belle Mead, N.J.), who finished with two goals. Mangan added one assist to lead RU with four points.
First-year head coach Brian Brecht’s squad finished the 2012 regular season with a 6-9 overall record and 1-5 mark in BIG EAST action.
Klimchak netted all three of Rutgers’ first half scores off feeds from his Scarlet Knight teammates. The 2011 All-BIG EAST Second-Team selection’s scores at 13:47 and 10:33 in the first period were assisted by sophomore A Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.). Klimchak was assisted by Mangan at 8:41 in the second period for his third goal.
The three goals from Klimchak were matched by the Hoyas in the first half, sending the game into the break tied at 3-3. Hover scored RU’s first point of the third period off an assist from sophomore M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) to end a string of good luck for the Hoyas, setting the score at 8-4 in favor of GU at 6:40.
Mangan fired in his first goal to start the fourth period for RU, scoring on an unassisted play at 13:48 to make it 8-5 Georgetown. The Hoyas snuck two more scores past the Scarlet Knight defense before Mangan notched his second goal with 5:17 left in the game off DePaolera’s third assist of the night. Named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List during the regular season, Mangan sealed his hat trick with 2:02 left in the game on an unassisted play. The score was his team-leading 40th point of the season, wrapping his senior campaign with 30 goals and 10 assists.
Hover scored his second goal with 23 seconds left in the contest for RU’s last goal, while Georgetown added an additional point with nine seconds left in the game to set the final result of 13-8. Georgetown improved to 7-6 (3-3 BIG EAST) with the outcome.
DePaolera’s three assists improved his team-best amount to 22 to finish the year. With 15 goals, his 37 total points finished second behind Mangan’s efforts. Klimchak’s hat trick concluded his campaign with 27 goals, good for second-best for the Scarlet Knights. He added seven assists in 2012 to finish third on the squad with 34 total points.
Sophomore D Nick Contino (Branchburg, N.J.) finished the game with a team-best three caused turnovers. Freshman M Blake Burkhart (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior D Ryan Warnick (Boonton Twp., N.J.) brought in five ground balls each to tie for the team lead. Junior G Joseph Donnelly (Newtown Sq., Pa.) made 13 saves in between the pipes, while allowing 13 goals to be charged with the setback.
The following nine Scarlet Knights concluded their playing careers with their efforts at Georgetown: M Michael Diehl (Flemington, N.J.), co-captain D Jacob Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md.), Hover, A Jonathan Lefferts (Moorestown, N.J.), Mangan, A Michael Stagnitta (Brewerton, N.Y.), Warnick, co-captain M Zach Zenda (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) and co-captain M Nick Zerrillo (Brewerton, N.Y.).
