PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 23, 2012) – Freshman midfielder Blake Burkhart (Newport Beach, Calif.) and redshirt sophomore attackman Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) have been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced by the conference office on Monday. Burkhart was a force at the faceoff X in RU’s 13-9 win over Michigan on Saturday, April 23, winning 12-of-14 opportunities. Klimchak had a career night against the Wolverines, scoring six points from a personal-best five goals and one assist.
First-year head coach Brian Brecht praised the two Scarlet Knights for helping Rutgers secure the Senior Night victory.
“Scott really did a great job this weekend finding the seams and getting into the open field to finish his shots,” Brecht said. “His abilities in transition and on the inside really allowed us to play at our best.
“Blake has really been sinking his teeth into competing at the faceoff X, as well as improving his overall game. It paid off this weekend. He not only controlled the draws, but he gave us great possessions when we needed it in the second half and started transition for us off the faceoff.”
Burkhart also notched the first assist of his career, helping on Klimchak’s third goal of the game at 13:40 in the third quarter. Burkhart’s fourth period was his best, as he went 8-of-8 on faceoffs. He additionally hauled in a team-leading six ground balls. The conference recognition is the first of Burkhart’s career.
Klimchak’s performance marked the third hat trick of the season and the sixth of his career. He also caused a career-high two turnovers and scooped two ground balls against Michigan. The league mention is the second of his career, after making the Weekly Honor Roll (Feb. 21, 2011) last season with a 10-point weekend against Wagner and Manhattan. Klimchak was a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011.
The two RU players earned the squad’s eighth and ninth individual conference honors of the 2012 season.
Rutgers finishes the regular season at BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Friday, April 27. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
