PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers gymnastics team (17-6) will travel to the EAGL Championships on Friday, March 3. The Championships will be held on the campus of the University of Maryland at 6:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights wrapped-up their regular season with a second-place showing at a quad-meet on March 24 to finish with a 17-6 record, marking the third time in five years the team has posted at least 15 wins.
Rutgers competed against Penn State, Yale and New Hampshire at the March 24 meet. RU defeated New Hampshire and Yale with an overall team score of 191.550 but fell to the host Nittany Lions, who scored a 196.325 to take first. The meet was highlighted by RU's one-two placing in the all-around as Beth Fittery (Denver, Pa.) captured first (38.225) and Lorena Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga.) second (38.175). The Scarlet Knights beat Yale three times this season to improve to 9-12 all-time against the Bulldogs and also posted two wins over EAGL opponent New Hampshire this winter.
The Scarlet Knights, under the direction of head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton, will be competing against six other squads at Friday's championship: George Washington University, the University of Maryland, the University of New Hampshire, the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State, the University of Pittsburgh, and West Virginia University. North Carolina State finished the regular season at the top of the EAGL standings with a regional qualifying score of 194.880. RU posted a regional score of 191.300.
North Carolina won last year's EAGL title for the second consecutive year with 195.325 points, with NC State taking second (195.075) and West Virginia third (194.900). Rutgers finished seventh with a score of 191.425.
