Scarlet Knights Defeat Cornell with Highest Score of Season

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J.  – The Rutgers gymnastics team (13-2) posted its highest team score of the season en route to a 192.575-190.350 defeat of Cornell University in the team's final home meet of the season. The seven seniors on Rutgers' 2007 roster were honored in special ceremony prior to the start of the meet.

    RU boasted a top-three finisher in each of the four rotations, including a sweep on floor with a season-best 48.875 overall score on the event.

    The Scarlet Knights posted a team score of 47.750 on vault but found themselves trailing after the first rotation as Cornell posted a 48.425 on bars. Rutgers was led on vault by Lorena Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Latara Northcutt (Snellville, Ga.), who both scored a 9.675 to tie for third on the rotation. Freshman Prishani Seebadri (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) was not far behind with her score of 9.625 to take fourth overall.

    Rutgers captured the first two places on bars and went on to score a 48.650 on the apparatus, their second-highest score of the season. Stephanie Pannick (Archbald, Pa.) took first with a 9.800, and Johnson tied for second with a 9.775, tying her season-best mark. Northcutt and Seebadri were the third and fourth Scarlet Knights to post at least a 9.700 on the rotation, with a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.

    Beth Fittery (Denver, Pa.) tied for first on balance beam with her season-best score of 9.700. Johnson also went on to finish in the top-three, posting a score of 9.600 to take third and the Scarlet Knights finished with a team score of 47.300.

    Rutgers had its best performance of the season on floor to secure the win over the Big Red. The Scarlet Knights posted a season-best 48.875 as seniors Fittery, Johnson, and Straka swept the event. Fittery took first with a season-best score of 9.825 while Johnson and Straka tied for second with a 9.800.

    Johnson led the team in the all-around with a final score of 38.850 while Fittery posted a score of 38.475.

    The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Friday, March 9, when they travel to Towson (Md.) for a 7:00 p.m. dual meet.
