  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s gymnastics team had 11 of its members selected to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) All-Academic Team, the league announced Wednesday. In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.00 or higher in the two previous semesters.

Senior captains Bonnie Hart (Oakridge, NJ) and Kamla Modi (Bayside, NY) lead the Rutgers contingent with their third career selections to the team. Hart is a chemical engineering major with a 3.352 GPA and was also an all-academic selection in 2000 and 2002. Modi, who was named to the academic team in 2001 and 2002, has a 3.893 GPA and will receive her degree in psychology.

Senior captain Kristen Marino (Hillsborough, NJ) leads the list of second-time award winners. Marino earned a spot in 2000, and will graduate in May with a degree in exercise science. She has maintained a GPA of 3.850 and was the EAGL Specialist of the Week twice this season.

Also earning their second awards are a quintet of sophomores: Janice Blackistone (Kensington, MD), Tracy Heckler (Laurel Springs, NJ), Jennifer Miksan (Carol Stream, IL), Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) and Stephanie Zick (Pittsburgh, PA). Heckler, Zick and Miksan, along with Modi, were named Academic All-Americans at the end of the 2002 season by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coached for Women (NACGC/W).

Earning their first league honors were juniors Laura Iepson (Sweetwater, NJ) and Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) and sophomore Jessica Orlando (Erie, PA).

All 77 EAGL gymnasts will be honored at the awards dinner on Friday, March 28, at the annual EAGL Awards Banquet in Durham, N.H. The eighth annual EAGL Championship meet is set for Saturday, March 29, in the Whittemore Center on the campus of the University of New Hampshire. The meet starts at 6:00 p.m.
