PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers gymnastics senior Kristen Marino (Hillsborough, NJ) has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Specialist of the Week. The weekly conference award honors gymnasts who compete in less than three events.
Marino, a senior tri-captain, led the Scarlet Knights to one of the program’s top finishes over the weekend as Rutgers defeated Temple and Bridgeport. The team’s score of 193.950 was the third-highest in program history, behind the record of 195.400 (Feb. 26, 2000) and the second-place score of 195.12 (March 1, 2000).
Marino posted record scores on vault and bars. She took her first vault title of the season, scoring a 9.825, the second-highest vault score ever posted by a Scarlet Knight. Marino, whose previous high was a 9.800, was only 0.05 from tying the record (9.875), set by Rachael Ciarlante (1996-99) on March 12, 1997. On bars, Marino shone again, winning her fourth bars crown of the season. Her 9.925 on bars ties her for third place in the RU record book, becoming the only other person on the list besides former teammate Dawn Campbell (1997-2000), who holds the record of 10.000, as well as second all-time (9.950) and third.
Marino becomes only the third Scarlet Knight to win the league honor and the first to receive the specialist award, as it is in its first year. In 1997, Meredith Behson (1994-1997) became the first Scarlet Knight to win the EAGL Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 18. The last RU gymnast to receive the award was Katie Russo (1999-2002) on Feb. 28, 2000.
Currently ranked seventh in the Northeast region for bars and 19th on vault, Marino leads the team with regional qualifying averages of 9.770 (bars) and 9.660 (vault).
The Scarlet Knights (12-8, 0-5 EAGL) will head to No. 4 Arizona State for the UNO’s Classic on Friday, Feb. 28, at 9 p.m. ET. The meet also will feature the No. 25 University of California.
