PISCATAWAY, NJ - Sixteen members of the Rutgers gymnastics team were selected to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) All-Academic Team, the league announced Monday. The Scarlet Knights led all EAGL teams with the most honorees for the third consecutive season.
North Carolina State was second with 14 recipients, while George Washington and West Virginia each logged 12 qualifiers.
In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the two previous semesters. Freshmen are also eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
Five of the Scarlet Knights 16 recipients were three-time selections, including juniors Elizabeth Fittery (Denver, PA), Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, GA), Casey Santangelo (Cherry Hill, NJ), Kelly Straka (Fairless Hills, PA) and senior Jamye Shelton (Griffin, GA).
Sophomores Stephanie Pannick (Archbald, PA) and Jacquelyn Verdon (Freehold, NJ), along with senior Lauren Sisler (Newport, VA) each picked up the second All-Academic awards of their careers.
Earning their first All-Academic honors were freshmen Kristy Behr (Northport, NY), Jessica Haddaway (Baltimore, MD), Alison Hartwig (Wayne, NJ), Latara Northcutt (Snellville, GA) and sophomore Elizabeth Bohnsack (Scottsdale, AZ). Junior Stephanie Pryor (Neptune, NJ) and seniors Gina Roselle (Tinton Falls, NJ) and Dawn Giel (Milford, NJ) also received their first career awards.
The Scarlet Knights will face West Virginia in their final meet of the regular season on Saturday, March 18, at 1:00 pm.
Each of the 89 EAGL All-Academic selections will be honored at the awards dinner on Friday, March 24, at the annual EAGL Awards Banquet at the Embassy Suites Hotel. The 11th annual EAGL Championship meet will be held on Saturday, March 25, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on the Livingston campus. The meet is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm and the doors will open to the public at 5:00 pm.
