PISCATAWAY, NJ - Freshman Latara Northcutt (Snellville, GA) finished first in each of the three events she competed in, as the Rutgers gymnastics team (10-6, 1-4 EAGL) was victorious in its final regular-season home meet on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Livingston Recreation Center. Also competing at the meet was Towson, Rhode Island, Bowling Green and Bridgeport.
The Scarlet Knights scored 190.550 points to finish first, followed by Towson in second (190.050), Rhode Island in third (187.150), Bowling Green in fourth (184.300), and Bridgeport in fifth (174.875).
Northcutt was the Scarlet Knight’s top performer in the vault, tying for first place with Towson’s Christina Ghani with a 9.750. Junior All-American Beth Fittery (Denver, PA), who took second in the all-around with a combined score of 38.250, finished behind Northcutt in a tie for eighth place with a 9.475.
On the uneven bars, Northcutt and Fittery finished in a three-way tie for first place with Towson’s Cristina Lindo, as they each recorded a 9.725. Freshman Jessica Haddaway (Baltimore, MD) tied for fourth on the bars, scoring a 9.675.
Northcutt secured her third first-place finish of the night on the balance beam with a 9.575, while senior Gina Roselle (Tinton Falls, NJ) took second with a 9.550. Junior Casey Santangelo (Cherry Hill, NJ) rounded out RU’s strong performances on the beam, as she scored a 9.400 to finish tied in fourth place.
Junior Kelly Straka (Fairless Hills, PA) posted a 9.725 to finish tied for second place and lead the Scarlet Knights on the floor exercise. Fittery took fourth with a 9.700, while senior Lauren Sisler (Newport, VA) tied for seventh with a 9.600.
Following Saturday night’s meet, Rutgers honored its five graduating seniors – Roselle, Sisler Dawn Giel (Milford, NJ), Erin Lynch, (Mullica Hill, NJ), Jamye Shelton (Griffin, GA).
The Scarlet Knights will next compete on Saturday, March 4, when they travel to Ithaca, NY, to take on Cornell at 12:00 p.m.
