PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers gymnastics team (3-1, 1-1 EAGL) defeated Temple by a score of 191.650-184.675 on Wednesday night at the Livingston Gymnasium.
The Scarlet Knights won all four events and had at least two athletes place in the top-three, as RU put forth its highest scoring output of the season.
Juniors Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, GA) and Beth Fittery (Denver, PA) finished first and second, respectively, in the all-around. Johnson posted a combined score of 38.425, followed by Fittery with a 38.100.
Freshman Latara Northcutt (Snellville, GA) took first in the vault competition with a 9.650, while Johnson placed second with a 9.625. Junior Jacki Campbell (Wheatley Heights, NY) finished fourth with a score of 9.550 and senior Erin Lynch (Mullica Hill, NJ) tied for fifth with a 9.500.
Johnson and Northcutt tied for first place on the uneven bars with a 9.650, while junior Casey Santangelo (Cherry Hill, NJ) took fourth (9.475) and Fittery tied for fifth place (9.425).
Santangelo led the Scarlet Knights on the balance beam as she tied with Temple’s Winter Sneed for first place, scoring a 9.675. Rutgers would go on to place in the next three spots, as sophomore Tiffany Schramm (Orange County, CA) took third (9.650), Northcutt finished fourth (9.600) and Johnson was fifth (9.575).
On the floor exercise, junior Kelly Straka (Fairless Hills, PA) and Fittery finished in a three-way tie with the Owls’ Noelle Moore for first place, each scoring a 9.725. Santangelo placed fourth with a 9.650, while Lynch and senior Lauren Sisler (Newport, VA) tied for fifth with a 9.600.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they host Southern Connecticut and Brockport at 1:00 p.m.
