  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Five members of the Rutgers University gymnastics team have qualified for the 2004 NCAA Northeast Regional, which will take place April 3, 2004, in State College, PA.

The Scarlet Knights’ representatives will be Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) on balance beam, Stephanie Zick (Pittsburgh, PA) on uneven bars and Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, PA) in the all-around. Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) qualified as an alternate on bars and Elizabeth Fittery (Denver, PA) earned an alternate invitation in the all-around.

Abrams, a first team All-EAGL selection on the balance beam, established a new beam record when she scored a 9.925 against Temple of Jan. 21. In the regular season finale against North Carolina, Ursinus and Cortland, Abrams scored a 9.925 once again, and is averaging a 9.661 in 12 meets this year. At last year’s Northeast Regional, Abrams scored a 9.800 on beam to finish in 20th place.

Zick, a second team All-EAGL selection on the uneven bars, scored a 9.750 at last week’s EAGL Championships and makes her first career appearance at Regionals. This season, Zick has a team-best 9.796 average on beam, including a 9.900 against Maryland, Temple and Bridgeport on Feb. 28.

Johnson has competed in the all-around in 11 meets this year, including last weekend’s EAGL Championships. She is averaging a 38.534 with a season-high of 38.925 against North Carolina, Ursinus and Cortland.

Shterenberg, who qualified for last year’s Regional in the all-around, is an alternate on the uneven bars after scoring a team-best 9.800 to tie for 25th place overall. She is averaging a 9.801 this season on bars and has also competed this year floor exercise and balance beam.

Fittery is an alternate in the all-around, and has an average score of 38.342 in the event this year. She scored a 38.000 at the EAGL Championships, good for a 17th place finish.
