Rutgers Finishes 8th at EAGL Gymnastics Championships

  • PIITSBURGH, PA - The Rutgers gymnastics team scored 192.475 points to finish in eighth place at the annual EAGL Championships, held on Saturday evening at the Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. West Virginia won the league championship with a 197.050. North Carolina (196.675) and Pittsburgh finished in second and third place, respectively (196.050).

    Rutgers’ best event was the floor exercise, as the Scarlet Knights scored 49.050 points, led by second-team All-EAGL selection Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA), who notched a team-best 9.875 to finish in a tie for 13th place. Stephanie Zick (Pittsburgh, PA), who earned second team All-EAGL honors on the uneven bars, scored a 8.500 to finish in tie for 19th place. RU’s other competitors on the floor were Nicole Bradder (Dover, NH) (9.750), Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, GA) (9.750) and Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) (9.250). EAGL Gymnasts of the Year Courtney Bumpers of North Carolina won the event with a perfect score of 10.000.

    On the uneven bars, Marinelle Antonio (Mt. Laurel, NJ) and Shterenberg each scored a 9.800 as Rutgers scored 48.825 points. Antonio and Shterenberg finished in a tie for 25th place. Two Scarlet Knights – Tracy Heckler (Laurel Springs, NJ) and Zick – scored a 9.750. Freshman Elizabeth Fittery (Denver, PA) had a 9.700 while Lorena Johnson scored a 8.750.

    Johnson scored a team-best 9.675 on vault as Rutgers scored 47.800 points in the event. Jayme Shelton (Griffin, GA) was second overall for Rutgers with a 9.650 while Fittery and Jackie Campbell (Weatherly Heights, NY) each had a 9.425.

    First team All-EAGL selection Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) scored a 9.100 on beam to help Rutgers notch 46.800 points. Bradder had a team-best score of 9.825 to finish in a tie for seventh place. Johnson had a 9.450, followed by Wight (9.250), Gina Roselle (Trinton Falls, NJ) (9.175), Abrams (9.100) and Fittery (9.050).

    In the all-around, Fittery scored 38.000 points to finish in 17th place while Johnson had 37.625 points to claim 18th place.
